Being a Multi-Creator
What is a multi-creator?
Is your passion outside a single domain, and do you love learning through creation? Then you might be a multi-creator (or full-stack creator, as some may call it).
Some people see us as fleeting, unfocused or even immature. It is difficult to brand yourself, and your company if you have multiple different projects.
Is it bad for business?
In short, probably. Building a sustainable business takes time, effort and incremental forward steps. Losing focus on one project as you spend more time on a newer project is going to pause that forward momentum.
However, the experience gained from working as a multi-disciplinary creator can be hugely beneficial to projects and teams. In smaller companies and start-ups you will often need to wear multiple hats; making business decisions, taking client calls, deciding on a design, and coding a new feature.
Being a multi-creator already has you poised for success, as you are used to switching head spaces and frames of thinking. You have already gained experience in related fields.
Who am I?
To give a little bit of context, when I was 16, studying in England, I first had to decide on a career focus. I figured economics would be fun. I liked the intersection of human behaviour and systems (and that passion has grown). Sadly, my teacher pushed me off that path. I dropped economics to focus on physics. At least that was general enough to provide job security. My teachers were so inspiring I ended up continuing to study physics at university.
However, not liking the idea of working in a lab, I needed to find a different career after graduation. By chance, I got a job at an app studio creating a star-gazing app. Here I got my first taste of professional coding, and I was addicted.
From that first job of working on an educational star-gazing app, I transitioned to an architectural design app, language learning software, point-of-sales software, and lots of smaller projects in between.
What is my business about?
I published an educational augmented reality app featured by Apple. I have launched a video game that hasn’t yet covered the cost of its app icon. I released a SaaS product that is inspiring people to rethink their tools and communication methods.
I am also a director for a non-profit co-working space, and I am also a VR developer.
What else do I do? I climb, hike, camp, surf, paint, sew, 3D design & print, and do a few more and want to do so many more things.
So what?
I often get asked how I manage to deliver on a variety of projects, how I find new projects to work on, or whether I will ever stop and focus on one.
