- Measure input, not output
Measure input, not output
Tracking your progress without the disappointment
It is easy to compare yourself against others nowadays. I do it all the time. I compare my my struggling business against an upstart with $60k is pre-launch revenue. I compare growth numbers with those who get featured on podcasts. I compare myself a lot in unhealthy ways, and I often need to remind myself that it doesn't do much good.
You need to acknowledge when you do not have control of the situation. The only thing you can control is your input, you can rarely control the output.
You can control that you work towards your dreams every day. But you can’t guarantee that those dreams will be achieved in 12 months.
You can control the ingredients in a recipe, you can make sure it’s cooked to perfection. You cannot control someone’s tastes and your guest may still not enjoy their meal.
This means you can’t base your happiness on your output, but you can certainly celebrate it!
When I made ARcheology I knew I was making something special, but I was incredibly lucky that Apple decided to feature it! I literally shot out of bed, jumped around the room, and treated myself to some good food that day.
I can keep showing up and make sure my input is always quality. But I cannot set an expectation on something out of my control.
Do you sometimes struggle with unfair comparisons? How do you deal with it, let me know!
